Spencer Salas, an associate professor of middle, secondary and K-12 education in the College of Education, recently returned from India and Nepal where he served as an English language specialist teacher trainer.
In India, Salas primarily worked with secondary school teachers of English who work in New Delhi’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods. Salas’ global efforts in India were funded by a grant from the U.S. State Department Regional English Language Office program and hosted by the State Council of Education Research and Training, an autonomous body of the Government of Delhi.

Graduate certificate programs can provide individuals with an important educational credential in a focused area of study, and the University is seeking to increase program visibility through a new mini-marketing campaign.
“A graduate or post-master’s certificate enables individuals to obtain specialized training in a particular academic or occupational area that can help advance their careers,” said Karla Stanchina, manager of communications for the Graduate School.

The Human Resources Department is accepting applications for the 2014 edition of its award-winning “The Leadership Experience.”
This 56-hour program, held in seven sessions, is designed for University employees who lead/supervise individuals or teams. Earlier this year, the College and University Processional Association named “The Leadership Experience” its recipient of a national Award of Excellence for Human Resources Best Practices.

Mohammad Rashedul Hasan, a doctoral student in computing and information systems in the College of Computing and Informatics, will defend “Topology-aware Approach for the Emergence of Social Norms in Multi-agent Systems” at 1 p.m., Thursday, June 26, in Woodward Hall, Room 338. Anita Raja is the dissertation advisor.

Wells Fargo has awarded a $50,000 grant to the Charlotte Teachers Institute (CTI), an innovative partnership among Davidson College, UNC Charlotte, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). The purpose of this partnership is to empower classroom teachers through the cultivation of content knowledge, creativity, leadership and collaboration.

UNC Charlotte students demonstrated their skills at the annual Association of College Unions International billiard and table tennis tournaments.
“Our students represented UNC Charlotte with excellence in competition and sportsmanship,” said James Contratto, assistant director of student activities for weekend programs.
In the men’s 9-ball billiards competition, UNC Charlotte’s David Anderson took second place among a field of 50 players.

The Office of International Programs, in conjunction with the International Student/Scholar Office and the International Club, will host screenings of the 2014 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony/game and finals/closing ceremony in Norm’s in the Student Union.
The opening ceremony/first game will be from 3 to 6 p.m., Thursday, June 12. The finals/closing ceremony will be shown starting at 3 p.m., Sunday, July 13.

The UNC Charlotte Energy and Environmental Assistance Office again is offering incentives to faculty and staff members to help improve Charlotte air quality during the summer ozone season.                                           

Season tickets for 2014 Charlotte 49ers football are now available to the public through the Charlotte 49ers Ticket Office. All tickets for the University’s second football season can be purchased online at Charlotte49ers.com.
Six home games will be contested at Richardson Stadium, beginning with the opener on Saturday, Sept. 6, against Johnson C. Smith, followed a few weeks later by a game against Charleston Southern (Sept. 27) as part of Niner Nation Family Weekend.
