Preserving history is important to Meredith Evans. Future generations will learn about the University and the greater Charlotte region through her efforts. As associate University librarian for Special Collections in the Atkins Library, Evans is responsible for three units – the Digital Scholarship Lab, Digital Programs and Special Collections, which includes University Archives.

Registration for the next 15-week offering of Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less begins on Monday, Aug. 12. A weight-management program developed by health experts, Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less is open to State Health Plan members who can participate for $30 with a $25 refund for those who attend 10 of the 15 sessions.

Scott Gordon, chair of the Department of Kinesiology, will be a guest on WFAE’s “Charlotte Talks” at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 6, to discuss obesity. The program is rebroadcast that evening at 9 p.m.

UNC Charlotte will test its Alertus emergency alert software between 10 and 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 9.   The Alertus software is connected to the PIER Emergency Alert System.

The TweetChina project is designed to explore how China is discussed and represented on Twitter. China-related tweets were selected from several dozen billions of tweets archived by UNC Charlotte’s Charlotte Visualization Center and visually represented in map, picture, text and event modes.

James Tabor, chair of religious studies, and two Levine Scholars (Caroline Brewer and Kevin Caldwell) will be guests on the Aug. 1 edition of WFAE’s “Charlotte Talks.” The program, which airs live at 9 a.m., will focus on the recent archaeological dig in Jerusalem led by Tabor. A rebroadcast of the show will air at 9 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 1.

Christine Talbot, a computer science major in the College of Computing and Informatics (CCI), recently received a National Science Foundation (NSF) scholarship to attend the 2013 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference. She was selected from a competitive pool of 900-plus applicants.

UNC Charlotte’s Office of Extended Academic Programs recently partnered with St. Stephen United Methodist Church to introduce a novel summer literacy program for students at Greenway Park Elementary School – a Title I institution in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. 

The University’s annual Convocation, which traditionally marks the start of the academic year, will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 20, in Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.

In keeping with national trends and best practices, a review of the University’s space management policy and procedures was initiated by Chancellor Philip L. Dubois this past year.  As a result, the University has developed Policy 601.4 “Space Assignment, Management and Alteration.”

UNC Charlotte and Sarajevo School of Science and Technology (SSST) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to initiate joint projects and to partner on scientific research programs common to both institutions.
