Series to explore the Civil War ‘Beyond the Myths’

A series of programs scheduled in February and March will look at the impact of the Civil War on North Carolina, and how the state’s role in the Confederacy plays out today in the ongoing tensions surrounding the monuments of that war.

Proposals being accepted for Chancellor’s Diversity Challenge Fund

The Council on University Community is accepting proposals for the Chancellor’s Diversity Challenge Fund, which supports initiatives that promote the daily value of diversity in the intellectual life of the campus. Faculty, staff or students are eligible to apply for awards of up to $5,000.

Graduate School accepting nominees for Reynolds Leadership Award

The Thomas L. Reynolds Leadership Award will be bestowed for the first time this spring; the award will honor excellence in graduate program administration and will be presented annually to a graduate program director (GPD) or graduate program coordinator (GPC). Recipients will be selected by a committee of graduate faculty and students. The award recipient will receive $1,000 and an engraved plaque and will have his or her name engraved on a perpetual trophy.

IST program achieves second Quality Matters certification

The Instructional Systems Technology Program recently received its second Quality Matters (QM) program certification. This new recognition is for Online Learner Success. UNC Charlotte is the second institution to receive this individual certification, since the introduction of QM program certification in 2015.

Employees receive priority registration for Camps on Campus

Camps on Campus is the University’s summer programs of academic enrichment camps for children and young people in rising grades one through 12.

UNC Charlotte faculty and staff members will be able to register their children before the public starting at 8 a.m., Monday, Jan. 28, by calling 704-687-8900. A valid UNC Charlotte ID is required.

Public registration will open at 8 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 29.

Ventureprise is accepting applications from UNC Charlotte students, faculty and staff for the spring 2019 NSF I-Corps cohort.  The program, funded by the National Science Foundation, helps participants bridge academic and entrepreneurial knowledge.

Queens University professor to kick off 2019 Great Decisions series

Alexa Royden, associate professor in the Department of Political Science and Sociology at Queens University, will present “Cyber Conflict and Geopolitics” at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 30, at UNC Charlotte Center City. This presentation is the first in the University’s 2019 Great Decisions Lecture Series.

Ireland’s ambassador to the U.S. to speak

Daniel Mulhall, the ambassador of Ireland to the United States, will present “A Virtuous Circle: Ireland, the EU and the U.S.” at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center, Salon A.

Mulhall became the 18th ambassador of Ireland to the United States in August 2017. His initial appointments were in India, Austria, the European Union and Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2005, while Ireland’s Ambassador to Malaysia, he was conferred with an honorary fellowship by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland for his work in connection with the Asian tsunami.
