Trustee Theresa Drew wins Newcomer of the Year Award
Theresa Drew, a member of the UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees and a managing partner with Deloitte, was honored at Leadership Charlotte’s 2014 Legacy Awards. This annual event recognizes Charlotte leaders who create lasting change and a measurable difference in the community.
Drew, who received the Newcomer of the Year Award, was praised by Leadership Charlotte officials for her ability to influence positive change and her dedication to community service.

Former Charlotte 49ers Jon Busch makes SAVES for SEALS
Former Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer all-America goalkeeper and 13-year MLS veteran Jon Busch is spearheading his fourth annual SAVES for SEALs campaign.
Busch, now in his fifth year with the MLS San Jose Earthquakes, started the SAVES for SEALs program four years ago with all proceeds going to the Navy SEAL Foundation to take care of families of the fallen.
MPA students to hold kickoff party prior to 100th annual city/county managers’ conference
The UNC Charlotte student chapter of an international city/county management will gather with government officials at a kick-off party 100 days before the association’s 100th annual conference in Charlotte.
“The kickoff party will give students an early opportunity to network and jump-start their careers in local government,” said Paarth Mehta, president of the student chapter of the International City/County Management Association. The chapter is affiliated with UNC Charlotte’s Gerald Fox Master of Public Administration program in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
University participating in ‘Race to the Beach’
For the third year, UNC Charlotte is joining in the N.C. Air Awareness “Race to the Beach,” a public outreach and education program from the N.C. Division of Air Quality.
The University’s Energy and Environmental Assistance Office is sponsoring the campus’ participation in this initiative, designed to encourage clean commuting, such as carpooling/vanpooling, riding the bus or LYNX light rail or biking to work.

A quarterly publication, UNC Charlotte magazine features stories of interest to alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends of the University.
Albert Scholarship seeks to develop engineering leaders
Investing in future engineering leaders is the goal of a new merit-based scholars program, made possible by the family of Craig and Darla Albert.
The Albert Engineering Leadership Scholars Program will emphasize applied learning, campus involvement and professional development.
PPS holds annual awards ceremony
Earlier this month, in conjunction with National Police Week, the University’s Police and Public Safety Department held a special ceremony to recognize departmental award recipients and individuals who received promotions.
Eric Cox was named Officer of the Year at the event, and Jennifer Behre was recognized as Dispatcher of the Year. Antoinette Rhodie received the Civilian Employee of the Year Award, and Officer Betty Anderson was presented the Community Engagement Award by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Mu Tau chapter.
Volunteers needed for Heroes in Recovery 6K
Organizers of the inaugural Heroes in Recovery 6K Trail Run/Walk, which will benefit the University’s Collegiate Recovery Community, are seeking volunteers to assist with the event, scheduled for Saturday, June 21.
Volunteers would help with event set up/tear down, registration, food set up, parking and water stations. Each volunteer will receive a Heroes in Recovery T-shirt at check-in. To assist, email the volunteer coordinator at heroesinrecovery@frnmail.com.
Reminder on hurricane preparedness
NOAA Hurricane Preparedness Week is through May 31, and the University’s Risk Management, Safety and Security Department encourages employees to be ready to respond and recover in the event of a natural disaster.
Hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, and hazards from tropical cyclones can come in many forms, including storm surge, heavy raining, inland flooding, high winds, tornadoes and rip currents.
